Our client, a leading Home Products company supplying large volume off-price stores, is seeking an experienced VP of Product Development who has worked across multiple product categories for home, seasonal soft and hard goods, and gifting.  Role is based in Brooklyn and is an in-office environment.  Company will offer relocation assistance for the right experienced candidate.
  • The salary range for this role is approximately $250,000.
Responsibilities:
  • Translate and Operationalize Product Strategy:  Work with Creative team to understand the overarching product strategy for each quarter/season, including the preliminary trend directions for each season.  Lead the process of interpreting and tailoring this vision into actionable direction for each product development team.
  • Drive Alignment Across Teams:  Ensure every team clearly understands how the company’s creative direction and strategic priorities should manifest in product formats, materials, themes, and storytelling.
  • Champion Format Innovation:  Evolve and grow the company’s existing product format innovation and uniqueness, fostering an environment of creativity and experimentation, aligning with trends and with customers in mind.
  • Ensure Market Relevance:  Guide teams to take a forward-thinking, trend-conscious approach grounded in commercial viability—identifying opportunities to drive volume through differentiated formats and internal innovation.
  • Insights-Driven Strategy/Check-ins:  Conduct comprehensive category and assortment analyses 2–3 times per year.  Extract actionable insights to identify growth opportunities, refine product strategy, and reinforce clarity on where the business is headed.
  • Trend Brainstorm Support: Facilitate organized department brainstorm submission compilation to work with creative and design to hone the major quarterly and seasonal brainstorms to guide teams’ development.  Ensure continued training and adherence of department members in brainstorm how-to.
  • Product Line Planning, Retail Readiness, and Channel Conflict: Guide team leads in developing retailer- and category- specific time-specific strategies informed by
  • Hindsight insights
  • Best practices in step-by-step development and time management
  • Leveraging key items vs one-offs
  • Key trends for following year
  • Support PD Team Leads in Development: Build strategic, efficient line lists tailored by customer and channel.  Shaping compelling buyer presentations aligned with retailer needs, market trends, and assortment strategy.  Mitigate channel conflict through
  • Bi-weekly Channel Conflict check-in meetings with Sales
  • Product differentiation training with team leads
  • Monitoring product diversity
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:  Collaborate with Design to foster smooth workflow between PD and Design.  Interface regularly with other department heads to promote transparency, alignment, and effective communication.  Working closely with Director of Sales to ensure:
  • Adherence to processes
  • Clarity of communication
  • Understanding and alignment on priorities and ability to meet deadlines
  • Process Development:  Build and implement key department processes where necessary to enhance performance and efficiency.  Organize and lead biannual comp shop trips to fuel inspiration and market relevance.  Support early-stage adoption and intelligent application of AI across the PD function.
Required Qualifications:
  • 10-15+ years of experience in a design or product development role in the home products & gifting sector
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience working with and travelling overseas factories for development
  • Trained eye for product and trend and the differentiators needed for styles, materials, and substitutions
  • Ability to work with planograms and create assortments
